Undisputed world No. 1 and 2022 Masters champion arriving on the back of two wins and a second place … what’s not to like?
Well, maybe his putting. It cost him a March hat-trick and seems to come and go. If it’s a ‘going’ week on the greens he’ll win easily.
Jordan Spieth
Masters form: 2-1-2-11-3-21-46-MC-4
Course specialist with a Green Jacket and three more top-fours from nine visits. Drives it straighter and longer than in his heyday but putter not quite the magic wand it used to be. Birdies galore but disasters too. Current golf is better than it looks on paper.
Jon Rahm
Masters form: 27-4-9-7-5-27-1
Defending champion and Europe’s best chance who has defected to LIV but not in the same form since switch-over. Had already won three before Augusta last year but yet to open his LIV account in five outings. Great driver who can struggle on the greens.
Hideki Matsuyama
Masters form: 27-54-MC-5-7-11-19-32-13-1-14-16
Golfing royalty in Japan thanks to that 2021 Masters triumph. Another great driver whose putter can go cold. Very solid Augusta record and a winner at Riviera in February. A T7 in Texas on Sunday was the perfect warm-up but a little worried about his aches and pains.
Will Zalatoris
Masters form: 2-6
Saves his best for the Majors and in his only attempts has finished second and sixth at Masters. Had to take long break last year for health reasons but quickly got back on the horse with 2nd at Riviera and 4th at Bay Hill. Weird new putting style seems to work.
Tiebreaker: Joaquin Niemann
Masters form: 0-40-35-16
Second LIV man on my Fantasy team, the Chilean has been the star man with two victories on the 2024 LIV circuit to go along with his Australian Open triumph. Fine shot-maker who’s getting better at Augusta each year and reaching his peak at 25.
