Wayward Lad, See More Business, Silviniaco Conti and Cue Card. Just some of the names to have triumphed in Wetherby’s Charlie Hall Chase. Make no mistake about it, this is a proper race.

Henry caught up with our Racing Ambassador Cornelius Lysaght to discuss the best of this weekend’s action from across the cards.

Henry Beesley: Cornelius, it feels like the season is really starting to click into gear now. How much are you looking forward to this weekend?

Cornelius Lysaght: There’s a bit of debate about when the Jumps season really kicks off. Some say it’s Chepstow, others say it’s the Showcase Meeting. But when you look at the cards at Ascot and Wetherby, this is it for me.

The weather’s beginning to turn, the ground is getting softer. The Charlie Hall looks excellent in addition to some other really intriguing runners at Wetherby and there are definitely some headlines to grab at Ascot…

HB: Let’s look at the Charlie Hall then. Bravemansgame vs Ahoy Senor round three…

CL: Every sport needs a rivalry and it’s great to see these two lock horns again. It’s 2-1 to Ahoy Senor between the pair, Lucinda’s horses are running really well at the moment and this is her stable star. Ahoy Senor’s form is really solid and he’ll be suited by the track.

Bravemansgame is clearly a potential superstar, though. But then you’ve got to forgive him his last run. After missing Cheltenham he got absolutely stuffed by Ahoy Senor at Aintree!

It could be a race to savour and at the early prices, I think Ahoy Senor is a much more attractive proposition.

‘It’s probably between the top two but don’t be surprised if Eldorado Allen runs a huge race.

HB: I agree that they should be much closer in the betting…

CL: It’s not a two-horse race though. Eldorado Allen runs for Joe Tizzard whose string are in good order. We know he goes well fresh, having won first time out last season in the Haldon Gold Cup and he was impressive winner of the Denman Chase last year as well.

The front two may have bigger targets down the line whereas this could be Eldarado Allen’s ‘Gold Cup’ so to speak. Similar comments could apply to Win My Wings as well, although Christian Williams’ horses are yet to hit top gear…

It’s probably between the top two but don’t be surprised if Eldorado Allen runs a huge race.

HB: For what it’s worth, I’m in the Bravemansgame camp. I just get the impression that Nicholls will have his horse a little further forward than Ahoy Senor before freshening him up for the King George.

Ahoy Senor may have bigger fish to fry later in the season…I think he can win a Gold Cup I think Ahoy Senor could go and win a Gold Cup whereas I don’t think Bravemansgame can.

Anyway, let’s look at Ascot then and Goshen is going Chasing…

CL: This is what just makes NH racing. He’s a real public horse who’s had his ups and downs and it’s terrific to see him over fences. It could easily be the making of him and this looks an ideal starting point. Right handed, small field, a bit of cut in the ground.

HB: Certainly looking forward to seeing him. There’s also a horse running at Ascot who has beaten the mighty Constitution Hill in a P2P…

CL: Yes! Anyharminasking runs in the 2:05pm. He obviously has leading claims but one I thought could be unexposed in that race was Call Of The Wild for Alan King. His horses are running really well at the moment and he could run a big great race.

HB: Anything else for us to keep an eye on at Ascot?

CL: The brilliant Venetia Williams gets her show back on the road. It wouldn’t be at all surprising to see Frero Banbou and Venetia start what could be another epic season in great style.

HB: And last but not least, might there be one in the Bumper for us..?

CL: I knew you wouldn’t forget that! When Paul Nicholls and Harry Cobden came to the Fitzdares Club a couple of weeks ago, Harry nominated an unraced horse to follow by the name of Fire Flyer and Nicholls was nodding his head vigorously in agreement… you’ll see his name entered in the last race at Ascot. He’s definitely one to keep an eye on!

Enjoy a brilliant weekend of racing all and good luck whatever you fancy!
