Known for its beautiful weather and crazy party scene, Superbowl LIV will be played in Miami at the Hard Rock Stadium. This is 10th time Miami will host the Superbowl, more than any other metropolitan area in the US.
In 2007, at Super Bowl XLI, Prince performed “Purple Rain” during a truly epic halftime tropical rainstorm, making it one of the most memorable shows in recent history. While reaching those heights may be difficult, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will surely bring the party back to the Super Bowl following last year’s tedious Maroon 5 performance.
We are not in Kansas anymore
50 years since their last Superbowl appearance, the Kansas City Chiefs are finally back on the big stage. For Clark Hunt, Chairman of the Chiefs and son of Lamar Hunt (credited for coining the term “Super Bowl”), this has been a long time coming. Winning the AFC Championship (a trophy which bears his father’s name) was only the beginning for Hunt as the Chiefs aim to conclude a 50-year quest for the only trophy that truly matters in American Football. That starts with Head Coach Andy Reid and Franchise Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, last year’s MVP, who will look to lead the team in bringing the Franchise’s second trophy back to Kansas.
Three years in and John Lynch has brought the 49ers back to the Super Bowl
The San Francisco 49ers have a proud Super Bowl history, having won 5 championships. Only the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots are ahead of them with 6 wins apiece. Their last Super Bowl appearance was in 2012 and it ended in a loss against the Baltimore Ravens. They were led by at the time by starting QB Colin Kaepernick, who is now notorious for taking the knee in racial protest during the national anthem a few years ago.
Since the hire of Kyle Shanahan in 2017, the 49ers GM John Lynch has built a roster through savvy trades (starting franchise QB Jimmy Garoppolo), free agent signings (all-pro CB Richard Sherman) and the draft (rookie sensation DE Nick Bosa), resulting in the team being primed to make a challenge in bringing the trophy back to the Bay Area since their last win in 1995.
The Battle of the Offensive Minds
Andy Reid, widely regarded as one of the most brilliant offensive minds in the NFL, is making his second appearance at the Super Bowl having lost his first as Head Coach for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2005. He squares up against Kyle Shanahan, son of legendary former Head Coach Mike Shanahan, a three-time Super Bowl winner. Kyle was on the losing end of his only Super Bowl appearance in 2017 with the Atlanta Falcons as the Offensive Coordinator.
These two head coaches have terrorized defences throughout the year, through creative play-calling, scheming and game management. While their styles differ, with the 49ers’ philosophy more based on play-action and running game and the Chief’s centred around Patrick Mahomes’s brilliant passing game, don’t be surprised if you see an offensive shootout on Sunday night.
The Grand Stage
As NFL fans are only too aware, anything can happen on any given Sunday. To reminisce on some iconic moments, just look at the second half performance from Tom Brady for the New England Patriots against the Atlanta Falcons in 2017, or David Tyree helmet catch in 2008 for the New York Giants against the Patriots, or Malcolm Butler’s interception for the Patriots against the Seattle Seahawks in 2014 — big plays change games.
Superstars will look to make the difference, as they often do, and there are plenty of them playing this weekend on both sides of the ball. Patrick Mahomes, arguably the best QB in the league, will be looking at his star TE Travis Kelce and WR speedster Tyrek Hill as his key targets.
For the 49ers, Raheem Mostert, fresh off a 220-yard, four touchdown performance against the Greenbay Packers in the NCF Championship, will look to cement his place as a star running back following years of being cut by six different NFL teams.
While there have been dull Super Bowls, notably last year’s Super Bowl between the Los Angeles Rams and the New England Patriots, there are far too many stars, both on the offensive and defensive side of the field, on Sunday night for that to happen again.
